Massive Cold

That's right, some kind of massive cold has come over me. I went to my morning Chemistry lab but then went to sleep and missed speech class and Chapel. Shame on me! I took two Tylenol Cold pills and I now have an insatiable desire for water, can't get enought of that stuff!

Anyway, what I really wanted to talk about is an interesting topic that came up in Bible class. It was discussed, How can: there be evil in the world, God be good, and God is powerful all be true at the same time. We have been discussing world views of different people and this was one of many things that puzzles non-christians and can even change the views of some Christians. So how can God still be good and powerful when there is evil in the world?

The answer is incomprehensible to man. The man we were reading about who brought up this topic eventually decided that God is good but he is not powerful because he is trying to explain it all logically. I have simply determined that we just cannot explain God or his reasoning. He is perfect beyond our understanding and his plan always works for the good of those who love him. Simple as that. It's a very interesting topic and obviously goes much deeper but these are just my thoughts.

  • Hope you feel better soon.

We discussed your topic extensively in Philosophy class, and my basic take on it is that people assume something that just isn't true, namely that a good and all powerful God will stop evil and/or pain. It's sort of like being a parent. Sure, they'd like to keep the kid from ever touching the hot stove. However, if the kid actually does touch the stove and gets burned, you can bet they won't do it again. Sometimes, experience is the only way some people will learn.

Also, part of the amazingness (is that a word?) of God is that he allows us free will. If he removed all evil from the world, he would also remove our power to do whatever it is that we want to do.

Yeah, that got long and kind of convoluted. Oh well...R

  • Good points, like I said it is a very deep subject with MANY things to say about it so keep letting me know what you all think.

  • Now the question is begging to be asked. Do we really have free will to choose or is everything predestined by God to occur?

If we have purely free will then God had no control over what Adam and Eve would do, but then again, He did place the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the garden. Before time He knew He'd have to send His son for the redemption of man. So I could make the argument that God's plan is for evil to exist in the world, so that through it He might provide a way of escape through His Son Jesus Christ. There's a lot more glory to be gained in saving someone from something than there is in just making a utopia for all to enjoy.
